Dentists Without X-Rays: How to Find a Reasonable Dentist
|When I moved to the U.S. at some point, like everyone else who moves to a new place, I had to find a dentist. But this wasn’t so easy as I thought…
My dentists abroad in Europe never used an x-ray, expect one single time to locate and extract my wisdom teeth.
Let me highlight this once again: my dentists in Europe never even mentioned the word “x-ray” to me! So naturally, the last thing I expected were two dozen x-rays to fix a simple filling.
I request a simple teeth cleaning job and I’m thrown out. They sing the same song “no reasonable dentist in this country will see you without x-rays”. Well the good news is these dentists are wrong, but this issue is upsetting anyways.
So what’s going on here? My way or the highway? What is this Nazi-like attitude?
***Don’t miss my 2023 Update below***
Meet the New Antisocial Industry: Dentists
In my quest to find a “reasonable” dentist here in the Baltimore, Washington D.C. area, I visited over a handful dentists here, one worse than the other.
After visiting some forums online I noticed I’m not the only one who noticed something is wrong here:
- you check in, even just for teeth cleaning, and they insist on taking x-rays. Not just one, a dozen and more!
- they send you straight back home if you refuse, even if you had a little tooth pain, for example from under a filling. I never needed x-rays to replace fillings in Europe, but here everything is different.
- they insist on regular x-rays for no reason…”just in case”. No thank you!
- and this one is the biggest one: they x-ray you after the procedure is finished, something I found out is called “defensive medicine”, just in case you are a weirdo and want to take legal action against them.
- when you refuse to take more x-rays at any stage, including even during treatment, guess what: they send you home. With a hole in your tooth that they drilled and left open. They don’t care. “My way or the highway”!
- they don’t even look at your mouth anymore, just x-rays. They might look into mouth for 30 secs and then talk for half an hour looking at x-rays. That tells me one thing: they need to sell the need for x-rays, and they are no longer skilled dentists who can just look at the tooth and see what’s going on. Again I’m talking about simple fillings, not serious root canal infections and the like.
- Now you may think “I better take my x-rays with me when I switch dentists”. Well, they already thought about that, too. They will tell you “these x-rays aren’t made of good quality, we have to take new ones” as soon as you walk in the door… Hey and that’s a great way to prevent you from switching from dentist to dentists, huh!
- I took the exact same x-rays to four dentists and received four different treatment plans with little overlap. Where one dentist said the tooth is OK, the other expected a “deep filling”. You see, dentists became fortune readers. Their fortune turns out to be your “supposedly” bad tooth with imaginary cavities!
- if you want to keep your dentist, buckle up: go twice a year and get your “full” dose of radiation. Just in case there is a bad cavity!
- Imagine your three year old getting x-rayed yearly for no justifiable medical reason.
Hence, I objected: “How come in Europe they do it without x-rays? Are they all unreasonable dentists over there? Should we send them back to school so they turn out like you?”
The best answer I got was “it sounds like a different school of thought over there”. Yes indeed. Here it appears we have the Dental Board of Little Adolfs…
Well it also appears x-rays bring in a lot of money, too, what a coincidence! I paid $450 for a simple cleaning and the “mandatory x-rays”.
Welcome to Dr. Adolf’s dentistry!
So this is how unreasonable it gets: they x-ray you when they are done so that they are able to “prove” they did a sufficiently good job, in case you come back with a lawyer.
And you pay for this in dollars as well as with an increase in your risk of developing cancer, such as thyroid cancer, see Dental X-Ray Cancer Risks, List of Scientific Studies. Yes, the radiation dose today sooo low. That’s why we now take two dozen x-rays rather than just one to do the job. Then they compare dental x-rays to background radiation, which is probably the most illogical reasoning coming from a dentist mouth ever.
You want a simple tooth cleaning? Yeah you could get this done for less than $100 elsewhere, without x-rays, but here they insist you need x-rays first. The whole mouth plus individual x-rays of each single corner, like 16 x-rays in total. For no reason. Well for $450 in my case 🙂 They want you to be “part of their practice”, not just coming for a random cleaning…. Interesting. It’s like joining a church.
Well and their attitude has a good reason: s/he needs to make some money and after all if you do happen to get cancer, who cares? Your problem! Yeah, you could have a rat under one of your teeth, wouldn’t you want to know?
Imagine if all those thyroid cancer patients had an accurate way to prove it was their dentists who gave them cancer, how many dentists would still x-ray you?
How to Find a Reasonable Dentist Who Works Without X-Rays
First of all there are empathetic and great dentists out there who work without x-rays. Do not believe this B.S. that “no one” will help you. And no, they never miss a cavity either. When you are properly trained you know how to look at teeth, not just x-rays.
OK this is how I found dentists who are reasonable, empathetic, skilled, open-minded, experienced, and actually talk to patients and treat them in a way they want to be treated…..without x-rays:
- Go to bing and look for holistic dentists in your area. And perhaps visit https://holisticdental.org
- Do not call them or visit them. It’s a gigantic waste of time and you will find all this unreasonable rejection to be disappointing. Some of these holistic dentists are “fake”. They will give you the same crap the do in person about “x-rays are so safe today” and “the radiation dose is so low”. Yes, in the past the dose was higher and they took one x-ray. Now it’s lower, they take 20 x-rays for a simple filling and another 10 x-rays three months later “for check-ups”. There is a pile of scientific data out there to question the safety of dental x-rays and they neither know anything about it, nor care about your health anyways. A dentist who doesn’t back off when you tell them you don’t want something, isn’t working on your behalf. And again we’re not talking about life-threatening conditions that warrant x-rays, we’re talking about a simple teeth cleaning job or replacing a small filling.
- Write an email template where you describe what kind of dentist and service you are looking for and specifically mention that you do not want x-rays, unless there is a serious health issue that has been identified by the dentist and that clearly requires x-ray images. After all you are not unreasonable yourself. X-rays are very useful when you have a known/visible condition, such as a root abscess or the like, or severe symptoms. My post is obviously about people who have little troubles with their teeth and are yet bombarded with unnecessary radiation.
- Send at least 100 emails (simply swap out the email address and first line “dear dr. Doolittle”). You get the email addresses from the holistic dental website or the dentist’s websites. The “success rate” for me was around 2%, response rate 5%, so you need a lot of emails. By the way this process is called “reverse marketing”, where the customer markets him/herself to the provider, not the other way around, that would appear the usual route. See how bad this market has become, we have to market ourselves to them in order to get our teeth treated!
- Watch the silence 😉 and the first emails come in.
- Hint: when you get emails with the usual “no reasonable dentists in this country will do this”, do not bother answering. Remember Ali G: “Talk to the hand because the head ain’t listening…” Be prepared they will email you this stuff so be cool and ignore, don’t get upset, there are too many Adolf dentists out there unfortunately. It’s an entire army, not just a couple, and they work with collective forces against you until you budge because of your tooth pain.
- Finally, sometimes weeks later, you’ll receive the email response from the ideal dentist. I mean the reasonable good dentist who is on your side.
- Pay them cash and ditch the dental insurance. If you think about it, a lot of this exploitation started with dental insurance.
- Thank them for being human, unlike the rest who only believes in dollars and B.S. coming from the A.D.A.
Here is an example email response I received from a reasonable, awesome, experienced, and empathetic dentist:
Hi,
Yes I totally understand and will be happy to work with you and your family! I will guide all of you on how to take care of your teeth with natural and organic materials and your safety, health and beliefs are our priority. Looking forward to meeting you!
Pls call us to set up appt.
Jackpot! We found the dentist we wanted without going through disappointing, time-wasting, upsetting, and expensive office visits!
How come people go to Starbucks and get upset when they order a super complex late with 12 ingredients and something is “missing”, but at the dentist office we are supposed to shut up, get pushed around, get treatments we don’t need and don’t want, pay for it, and be treated like in a concentration camp. No thank you! And they can quote their corrupt ADA “guidelines” I don’t care.
A lot of dentists out there need a reality check: Hey open the yellow book, there are hundreds of dentists out there in every major city. No one needs you! Either you listen and serve like everyone else does, or you get replaced. No one needs an Adolf in his/her life and definitely not an Adolf dentist! No one wants higher cancer risks in exchange for x-rays showing your teeth are OK.
I sincerely hope this post will encourage you to keep looking for a good dentist who treats you with respect!
Update Nov 2017
I receive emails at least once a week with calls for help! I still recommend doing what I wrote above:
A. Leave your current dentist. There is no point wasting your energy and time. It’s like trying to make a donkey dance.
B. Go to the Holistic Dental Association’s website and look for the member directory
C. Start emailing and tell them what you want
D. Wait and you will likely get a positive answer, eventually.
E. Consider ditching your dental insurance. It’s financing these and many more scams.
Karl Marx would have summarized the action plan like this: Dental Patients of the World….UNITE!. I don’t like the term patient. We are cash customers and not necessarily ill ;-). My slogan would be: “Dentist Customers of the world….UNITE!”
Also I found an interesting article in Reader’s Digest, available here: https://www.dentistat.com/ReaderDigestArticle.pdf
Update Nov 2021
Many moons passed since I wrote this article and I still receive frequent emails with questions. This topic is hotter than ever and there is no improvement in sight.
The first question I want to address is whether there is an email template you could use. Below is the email I used with great success:
Hi I have a question before setting up an appointment and found your contact details on the Holistic Dental Association's website. As crazy as it may sound, I recently moved to the US and have trouble finding a "compatible dentist". Abroad no one ever asked me for an x-ray, except when I had to take out my wisdom teeth, which I gladly accepted. I have religious objections against x-rays and would only consent to them if an emergency requires them. I understand the common procedures here are different and I'm happy to sign a waiver form and work without insurance. My general health and that of my teeth is relatively good. At this point all I need (and my wife and children) is a visual inspection. We are well aware of the fact that visual inspections may miss issues and are fine with that idea, and lived with this type of "risk" our whole life. Would that be OK with the doctor?
Feel free to use it!
The second question I receive frequently is which dentist I recommend? I recommend this dentist, they work in Bowie, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD and Annapolis, MD. My family has been going there since 2015 and we’re very happy. I recommend them because of many reasons, please click on the link to see the details.
Beware of “Fake” Holistic Dentists
Another theme I noticed from my interactions with my readers and others who happen to talk to me about dentists (a favorite conversational topic (^_^)) is that there are a number of fake holistic dentists out there, so watch out. They use the label “holistic” and then still coerce you to take semiyearly x-rays and ‘pump’ chemicals into you like there is no tomorrow. I guess the meaning of ‘holistic’ is kind of loose and not precisely defined. It would make sense to check them out for a ‘cleaning’, and test the waters first before going for major dental work.
You could also test their reaction to gauge where they stand and how open-minded they really are. Simply tell them you don’t use fluoride, not in your water, not in your toothpaste, (even if it’s not true) and watch their body language and reaction. If you receive a look like “you are the dumbest s**t walking on earth”, as I did in several offices, you’ll know who and what you are dealing with…
Important 2023 Update!
Good news, thanks to our reader Tina of Washington State. She reported there are two devices called CariVu and LŪM Transillumination.
These devices allow your teeth to be scanned without x-rays! This opens a new opportunity to find dentists that work without X-rays.
This is how you will find your new dentist:
Simply google for
Carivu dentist [your city or state name]
or
LŪM Transillumination [your city or state name]
Example: Carivu dentist Maryland
Google will automatically find dentists who talk about using Carivu in their office. Once you have found their website, give them a ring and book your appointment. This is by far the best solution, in my opinion because finding a “no X-ray” dentist through other means is very labor intensive.
The best part is that those dentists who invested in those devices really want:
a. to deal with people who don’t want x-rays
b. to avoid x-rays themselves
c. better scan results, as these devices perform better than x-ray technology in finding caries.
Wow 90 Comments! Please Also Share Your Story: How Are you Being Treated at the Dentist Office?
Please use the comment section below to share your story, ideas, comments, how you feel about dental x-rays, and how you are being treated by dentists.
Dear Savas Papadopoulos, I was not born in the States and I feel as sensitive as you do to the dental x-rays issue. I have no time today to describe what I went through with my dental care problems in the past few years and when I was younger or a child.
At the moment a molar of mine that underwent removal of the lead filling, started to hurt and I probably need a root canal. Recently they took 5 or 6 x rays of this tooth in addition to all the other ones done in the past. I showed the last ones to 5 different dentists. Two dentists said I need a root canal, two said I do not , stating that my tooth is only traumatized because they removed the lead filling. One wanted to give me another x ray to make sure he could see the problem more clearly. None of the dentists liked the x rays taken by the previous dentists.
Is there a dentist or endodontist in New Mexico or in the west or South-West of the US who can do a root canal without additional x rays?
All the dentists I spoke to told me that they will have to do at least another 3 or 4 x rays for the procedure.
I just started orthodontic treatment, and I like my orthodontist, I was given only two x rays of my mouth with the promise that they will not request any additional ones, but considering these two, the other 3 or 4 already given to the tooth in question and the ones that will be needed for the root canal, the total of x rays will be definitely more that I can take, without considering all the x-rays that were given to me in the past years.
Hi Isabella
I’m not a dentist but it’s a good starting point to find contacts in the holistic dental association member directory. Regarding root canals, I personally would rather extract the tooth, but it’s your tooth and health not mine and I’m not a dentist so whatever I write here just an opinion not a recommendation 🙂
However, you may want to have a look at this
https://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/dentistry/root-canal-dangers/
Naturally dentists will tell you this is outdated garbage but if you research it for a while you might notice the preponderance of evidence is on the side of the people who are critical of root canals. A large share of root canals end up seriously infected. In some cases these infections can end up being life-threatening. The interesting side is, however, what happens to the root canal tooth if it is not *visibly* infected, but nevertheless infested with bacteria. Because the tooth is essentially dead inside and has no immune system to protect its core, it could become a nest for bacteria that emit toxins into your mouth over years and years….
https://ec.europa.eu/energy/sites/ener/files/documents/136.pdf
Thanks for this reference. As you can see in the document, some EU countries x-ray 5x as much as others. Wherever the insurances pay easy money, they will scan more, obviously. If the dentists had to pay the x-ray out of their own pocket, how many x-rays would they take? I also found interesting the table where they show ‘risk of FATAL cancer’. I guess they had to exclude non-fatal cancers to improve the numbers 😉 Those are just fantasy numbers obviously. How would anyone be able to prove they got cancer from a dentist 10-20 years later? If anyone could sue their dentist for giving them cancer, the courts would be busy….and the dentists would think long and hard before turning on that x-ray machine….
And honestly I think that is probably the only way we patients will ever see an x-ray reduction: if someone finally figured out how to put the blame on the dentist, then all over sudden their guidelines will change dramatically. But it’s not gonna happen folks, more often than we would like, law and science are in the hands of $$$$….
Thanks for the article I was denied insurance coverage for the next three years for X-rays that led me here and I’m very aware of the medical situation in my country but it seems to be worse than ever and most doctors and dentists are in it simply for the sake of their wallets I will definitely be trying this approach I can’t ditch my insurance unfortunately because of fixed income but I am willing to pay for some of the costs out of pocket to cover keeping the teeth I have left it seems like I have little choice in the matter anyway
Can people post the dentist they have found who won’t take x-rays or at least only a maximum of four. I only get them so I can have my teeth cleaned. I would fly to other states if I need to.
Thank you for your post “DENTISTS WITHOUT X-RAYS: HOW TO FIND A REASONABLE DENTIST.” I have moved to a new city and was looking for advice on how to find a dentist who will respect my decision to limit x-rays. Very interesting that European dentists don’t rely on x-rays like Americans do. Your post isn’t dated. Do you have any additional advice/insight since you posted this?
The post is only a few years old and I receive emails every week at least….if anything, it’s getting worse and worse.
I say: “patients of the world, unite!”
We have had enough and we won’t be pushed around anymore. There are good dentists out there, the reasonable kind, and those are the ones that will receive our business at the end.
My advice is still the same, visit the holistic dental association website and contact as many dentists in your area as you can via email only. Hope this helps!
Dear Mr. Papadopoulos,
I just got home from a dental office where I refused X-rays for my son. The dentist did a hand check and said he saw 6 cavities and a cracked tooth but would not tell me where they were without consenting to X-rays! We left. He had just seen a different dentist over the summer who saw no cavities or crack – doubting all this developed in the last 3 months. I did a google search on dentistry without X-rays and found your accurate and humorous post. You’re right – I think the whole profession is subjective at best and a complete scam at worst.
Hi Rachel I hope you can find a holistic dentist in your area that will work without x-rays, as we did.
I like that you left the office. That’s the only way we the patients and customers, can fight back for our rights!
Good luck!
Thank you so much for your speedy response. Other than when I had braces, I managed to avoid X-rays until I was 42. The dentist said I had 15 cavities! I had just had my fourth child and thought maybe the pregnancy had hurt my teeth. I thought I would get a second opinion, but when I said this, they just sent another dentist from their practice, who, of course, concurred. They drilled out one side of my mouth, but could only do one side per day. I went to a different dentist with the X-rays, and he said, “I guess it was a judgment call, but I wouldn’t have filled any of them.”!! I am mad to this day. My older son was told he had 6 cavities before he got his braces on. I had the orthodontist look and he said he just has deep fissures in his back molars and the dentist was catching their instrument in the side of the fissure and interpreting it as a “stick”. The ortho said there was no decay present at all!
Again, thanks for your article and your help. Someone needs to do an investigative report on the whole field and put it on TV.
I totally agree and thank you for sharing your story! X-rays at the dentist office is just one way they are abusing the system and damaging our health. Physicians are no better. Go to a hospital with a simple cough and they will send you to a dozen CT and MRI scans, worth tens of thousands of dollars. As long as the insurances pay, they will use all kinds of fear tactics to push us into unnecessary and potentially harmful ‘diagnostic treatment’. In my opinion they are just filling their wallets and their records, to make sure no one can take them to court, just in case you do have something serious and it goes undetected.
Insurances of course are all behind these schemes and established these ‘standards of care’ so that they can spend more money. Fact is they are forced to pay out by law 80% of the premiums to patient treatments and “only” 20% they can keep as profits. Obviously this implies one thing: in order to increase profits for the insurance company, they need to increase spending…and they are really good at it! As long as we let them, they will continue doing it….
I am a dentist and have been not doing well when exposed to radiation. Each x ray exposure started to cause an issue at some point and I decided to go holistic. It’s not easy for a dentist to work that way too unless the patient completely trusts you. But I am very happy to know that patients are educated about the side effects of radiation today. This helps me keep myself safe from the exposure too and use x rays only when absolutely necessary.
Dear Dr. D.
I am sad to say that I am going to have to switch to a new dentist, because the practice where I have gone for 35 years has been sold and now the ” care” they provide will mandate constant x-rays. Can you contact me jsb-at-gmavt.net and let me know where you are? I appreciate Dr. Papadopoulos for hosting this material and Dr. D for writing in with his/her perspective.
Hi John
thank you for sharing your story!
I live in the Baltimore Washington DC region. I email you earlier.
If anyone else needs a dentist recommendation, please either leave a comment here or email me at papadopoulossav at yahoo.com
Savas
Hello Dr. D,
Thanks for your comments! Where are you located? I live in Las Vegas and I can not find a dentist who does not require x-rays.
Can you refer me to anyone in Las Vegas? If not, I am willing to travel. Thanks!
I had used one dentist for a number of years when suddenly he pulled this “full mouth X-ray” and exam thing for, at that time, $135.00. I had just come through a major illness uninsured and was $60,000 in debt. I needed time to pay this off, which I did. I told the dentist I could not incur more debt and I did not want the X-rays and exam anyway and why was he insisting? He said he was “responsible” for my total oral health. I told him I was responsible for myself, etc. It all ended badly and he left work undone.
I never could understand this strong arming of patients. As a woman, my mind instantly thought, my regular doctor does not force me to have a gynecology exam plus mammogram every year. Surely my regular doctor has more interest in my total health and surely there are more deadly risks taken if a woman chooses not to have these exams. For some reason we are “allowed” to choose in regular medical practice but not in dentistry?
The dentist says the patient is not allowed to release the dentist from fault because the patient is too stupid to know what’s best. To me this is very circular reasoning. I have had many fears this sort of thing would enter the general medical practice and that what the dentists are doing is a testing ground to see how far patients’ rights can be taken under a blanket of quasi-legal blather. The dentist position is the patient has no rights because the patient is too ignorant to have rights. Just wait until this is applied to life in general!
I smell money grubbing in the forced X-rays and exam. Because all dentists in my general area force the exam, I have gone from dentist to dentist as needed. I have noted of late that no matter what is the issue, the dentist splits the procedure over two days, about $300.00 per day so the total bill comes to about $600.00.
It has been written that dentists have the highest suicide rate of all the medical professionals. Even when I was a kid in the 60’s & 70’s, many people were terrified of dentists and the pain that might ensue. Dentists were feared and hated. Then there was “painless” dentistry and a push to be patient friendly. Now we are back to a hated and feared practice which keeps people from going to the dentist.
A great many ills may be caused by dental problems that poor people cannot afford to fix. This practice of forcing an exam and X-rays will keep more poor people from accessing needed care and there will be a much higher cost in the end. If a poor person could barely afford a filling, how many more hours must he work and save to afford the forced X-rays?
If the X-ray strength is so safe, why do they drape the patient’s upper body in a lead apron while X-raying the mouth??? Good question., that.
Thank you for this article. I just want to inform everyone that dental X-rays can be very dangerous. I have had limited X-rays despite being in America, and I got oral cancer (luckily with a high survival rate) very very likely from dental radiation I had in the area 10 years ago. Do the minimum with X-rays and try not to get one area X-rayed a lot.
Hi GMH, I am very sorry you have cancer and pray for it to heal quickly. I hope your story encourages people to push for fewer x-rays and only those absolutely necessary.
Does anyone know a good dentist in the Minneapolis/st paul area that doesnt require xrays? I just took my son to a dentist who insisted on xrays and then a mercury filling. I allowed the xray (which I regret now) but I objected strongly to the mercury so he used the other type but yesterday it just fell out. Its only been 4 days ! The whole visit was a traumatic ordeal for my son. The dentist was rude and I felt very rushed. Time to find a new one!
Hi Whitney,
unfortunately these types of dentists are not just rude, they tend to be incompetent as well. If a composite filling falls out after a short period, first of all find another dentist, it was probably due to moisture and hence it didn’t bond well.
Any dentist suggesting mercury fillings should be fired (by us customers) on the spot.
If you have any mercury fillings you would want to have them removed by holistic dentist as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately I do not know any holistic dentists in your area; please use the member directory on the holistic dental association’s website: http://holisticdental.org
All the best,
Savas
I’m looking for one in the Minneapolis area. Did you ever find one?
What a relief to find your post. I cancelled last day my appointment with an ” holistic dentist” who was imposing me an absurd numbers of X-ray. I told them: what is the purpose to select an holistic dentist if you do not take care of my health ? X-rays damage the body and it takes more than 2 years to leave your body. I am French and I confirm, in Europe only really necessary X-Rays are taken. Thank you.
Hi Clair
thank you for sharing your story!
I have also been at a “holistic dentist” of that sort. It’s a disaster…. To some holistic dentists the word ‘holistic’ means ‘whole wallet’ (^_^)
I am pleased to hear that in France they are also more careful than here. It’s like everywhere they care more than here. Here they care about themselves, specifically their income, and no one else. In a nutshell the individualism notion is starting to cost us our health.
Well at least we can still find reasonable dentists in Europe 😉 and a few, very few, here in the U.S….
All I can say is please don’t give up and keep looking; with some sweat and after losing some hair you will find a good dentist here, eventually.
Savas
Really great post!
I have been seeing the same dentist for about 16 years now. At first I was ok getting xrays every 2 years, only 1. After A few years I asked the dentist to stop giving me routine xrays, but that I was open to having them if he felt it was necessary.
The hygienist in the room rolled her eyes like I was crazy, made me feel like shit and of course he gave me the talk about how they are safe and what not.
But he said he would respect my decision and conversation over.
2 kids later, no xrays for them either. Well, I am sure this isn’t sitting well with him now lol
Last week we went for our cleaning and he throws it in my face that because I don’t get xrays he wasn’t able to detect the cavity that I have till now.
So what! It isn’t like he could cure it, and I wasn’t having any pain either. The thing that upsets me is he said he would respect me, but he doesn’t, he used the first opportunity he could to throw it back in my face.
I am in Canada, thankfully our insurance only allows xrays every 2 years, or as needed for procedures so we would never have to deal with this at every visit.
But I just think of all the times I had xrays and nothing was detected. I had my amalgam fillings removed and there was so much decay once the fillings were out that wasn’t even seen on the xray. Makes me realise that xrays are completely useless most of time. I am trying to find a holistic dentist in my area, but it is very difficult. The one I found has a note on their website about how important xrays are. Not sure if I should even bother emailing them. Thank you for the rant haha
A dentist retired sent paper work to another dentist .l went there now they want clean teeth without x-ray .want to charge 350.00 first visit.this is bull shit.
https://www.economist.com/science-and-technology/2012/04/14/little-and-not-often-please
Hi,Savas! I like your articles very much! This is a place we can stay together and fight together!I just went to a dentist office yesterday.I just asked for a cleaning and there is no teeth bothers me either. They gave me more than dozens X-ray without looking my teeeth first and the bill eight hundred dollars for all the things which they thought have to be done.when I look at that X-ray,I can not see any black things .But they insist that is a cavity.I just can not understand. When I walked out the office I feel really bad. I have never ever exposed myself to so many X-ray before. I had saw lots good reviews at this office .But later I found out they bought those good reviews with free whiting teeeth. That office lost my trust! I am just afraid they can do everything they can to hurt me for looking every penny from my pocket! My question is I need a deep cleaning but I can not do more X-ray and there is no dentist would like take the X-ray from the other dentist. How can I do now? Please give me some suggestion!
Hi Annie
I’m sorry to read about that bad experience you had with your dentist.
Unfortunately this appears to be the new normal today. I paid $450 about five years back for x-rays plus a simple cleaning job.
No x-rays, no cleaning. However, now I found a good dentist so there are is no more blackmailing 🙂
I think you need to ask them for your x-rays, let them email them to you.
Then email a couple holistic dentists in your area. You can find them in the holistic dentist association’s website.
I would email them and tell them I don’t want any more x-rays and I have brand new x-rays I can bring with me.
I also almost gave up hope but after emailing dozens (simply copy & paste) I found two good dentists in my area.
Good luck!
Mr.Savas, thank you so much for understanding and taking time to give me some good suggestions! I had the X-ray paper copy in my hand now.Maybe later I will ask them to email me for better visions of the X-rays!I will look for another dentist!
Recently I bought a book which is called Cure Tooth Decay. It is a really good book.In modern sociaty, what the dentist do to treat a decay teeth is drill and pull and never think about even a teeth is a life ! Every teeth it can heal by itself if treat properly. What the dentist do is to get the teeth worse and worse. And the penny dig dentist what they need to do is to drill the teeeth to dig the pennnies .If there is anything happen, all consequences will be ours. But we are So proteclessness. There must be some kind law to control the dentists to be a crazy digger, driller and puller! In a special sense, all the bad dentist are murders. They are teeth murder with no consequences!!! The law and the god should protect us to avoid all of the evils!! Of cause there are some good dentist too. They are angels from the god!!We should find out them!
Hi Annie
It’s funny because it’s true! And then again it’s not so funny 😉
I think once you find a good dentist, make sure he/she never leaves 😉 It’s true, we are so dependent on them. At the same time they can abuse their position and make lots of money with unnecessary and potentially risk procedures. Physicians do a similar thing when they ask for never ending, useless blood tests. I don’t think 6-month teeth cleaning is necessary but now that I found a good dentist, I rather pay for it than being forced to take 20 x-rays and drill a dozen teeth each year(^_^)
I doubt the law will do anything to protect us unless a lot of people speak up. I think the law almost always sides with the rich and powerful. Dentists all team up when one of them is under attack, that’s why complaining to another dentist will not likely help (^_^)
It would be much faster if we all simply get up and leave those offices who do those rip-off practices. A lot of people don’t realize how much power they actually have. Stand up for your rights, leave the office, and find a new dentist!
We should form a support group (^_^)
Good luck!

50 years ago when my kids were young i refused Sarah’s on them without a lead vest. I was po oh-poohed, but a couple years later he had the vests. Happily i still didn’t get my kids teeth xrayed. But it’s different today. We are not free in this free country to refuse xrays. I am so frustrated and sad that I cannot get a tooth filled because of this.
Hi Carol
I feel your pain and was in the same situation.
Luckily I found a good dentist after all. Please don’t give up and keep looking for new dentist. The effort will pay off you will find a reasonable dentist somewhere. There appear to be some but not many great dentists out there, so it might take some work to find him/her.
Wishing you all the best
Savas
PS: I guess the ‘free’ bit of ‘free country’ means the dentists are completely free to do whatever they want. We are just here to pay and open our mouth, that’s the new definition of ‘free country’…. (^_^)
Because of my brain surgery in 2016 I refuse dental x-rays, and I have excellent reasons for doing this. I have had way too much radiation and any more radiation could lead to a recurrence of the lesion resected in 2016. Now my dentist absolutely refuses to treat me. I am 60 and haven’t had a cavity in at least 20 years!!! How do I find a reasonable dentist? [My last dental x-rays were in 2015. It has only been three years.]
Hi,
I have been having dentist problems my hole life, but I have been going to the dentist regularly. And x-rayed regularly. I’ve had two deep cleanings and have been still getting my teeth cleaned regularly. I am now 81 and I have 16 teeth and I sure want to have them until the end of my life. On my last cleaning the dentist said I needed ex-rays, of course I said no. Av3rything feels fine. So he told me without exrays he would not clean my teeth. So, I hav been dong lots of reading and they are now finding a connection between cacer of the brain and thyroid. The cancer doctor said, do not let them exray all your teeth, only the one that hads a problem. I’m scared, how can I get my teeth cleaned? I know that brushing with Hydrperoxide helps. I use to take care of a lady who was 83 years old AND NEVER HAD A CAVITY. i WATCHED HER BRUSH HER TEETH THREE TIMES A WEEK WITH PEROXIDE. Bit with the medical doctors coming with this newd about cancer, these dentists are doing only for the money. What can we do. I think it will be a year I havn’t been. And the tarar is building. Just for a note, my daughter died of lung cancer, . Dhe wad having her deeth traightened. The doctor was taking a lot of exrays….the cancer went to her brain, her eas were bothering her, for two years she went to this dentist. He never aww this coming, never picked up one symptom…he retired the day he was told she died. We must fight these dentists, what they are doing to little children who now go to the dentist at 3 years old. More cancer to fill their little bodies.
I recently sold my dental practice but would love to discover how to reinvent myself as a NO x-rays practice in the state of Georgia. It is exactly write that dentists are taught to tell patients how low the dosage of digital radiography is without being taught more about how to read dosimeters. Insurance companies run the industry. I have gotten x-rays, FMS, & frequent panos as part of ortho and not, from my earliest memories and now it’s catching up with me in middle age with additional “recommended” medical testing and questionable symptoms that, alas, you can’t exactly prove came from the dentist’ office. Radiation is cumulative and in most cases unnecessary, in my opinion. Note how the recommendations for routine mammographies has changed every few years, like it’s guess work.
Every doctor is taught to cover themselves, lest they miss something or worse, didn’t provide the industry test standard. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If preventive care is begun at an early age the incidence of caries declines tremendously, as typically do cavities after the age of 16. I provided my patients with disclaimers/rejection letters to sign if they felt strongly about not taking x-rays, knowing there could be consequences. I would love a practice that focuses solely on prevention with referral to a community dentist if follow-up is desired, just don’t want any struggles with the board (whom I contacted about the idea & am still waiting for a response from for consideration). I saw on youtube where a guy started POLISHED Dental Spa a few years ago with that concept in mind but have since closed with no further information. If any of my Holistic community friends have ideas on the matter, do share.
Too bad Savas Papadopoulos didn’t respond to your post. I also saw (sadly) that the holisticdental.org link that is provided in this article is no longer valid/working.
Thank you! I’m trying your recommendation in Oregon, I haven’t been for a cleaning in over a decade due to this practice.
Tanya, I too live in Or and can’t find a dentist that fiesntbdpew the ‘standard of care bullhockey’. Please let me know if you find one. Thanks!
I am a dentist in Taiwan, happy to see this. Now I am near 60. For recent yrs I seldom x ray. For interproximal caries, experienced dentist can see it. Some initial caries detected by x ray may let it be,because it may remineralize by itself, and if U want to fill it,U still must reduce a lot of tooth structure. For periodontal problem, I use probe to know pocket depth, this will know bone level without x ray. For root canal Tx, all dentist know the average tooth length, and if the file go over root tip,p’t feel pain or experienced dentist can feel with fingers. So in most cases any dentist can do these basic Tx without x ray
Thank you Enjoe TSAI for chiming in, I really appreciate you sharing this with us!
Savas
Hi Dr Tsai, I’d like to know more info about your practise or your contact information to find out if it’s viable for me to travel there for dental work. I’m from mainland China but currently residing overseas. I have a cousin in Taiwan I’ve been meaning to visit some time in the near future. I haven’t been to a dentist for years after learning the dangers of x-rays and failing to find a dentist who would work without them.
Great post. I am a healthcare attorney so when they pull this “it’s the law” business, I always show them the ADA/FDA guidelines that show an increased risk of brain cancer with annual x-rays. Not that it helps. These dentists care nothing about a patient’s health when they require the x-rays.
Further, as a healthcare attorney, I am well aware that x-ray machines are the profit-making part of a dental business.
We need to form an organization to fight this abuse.
Hi Jose
thank you very much for your input and confirming the risks of x-rays. I agree it’s a total abuse at the expense of our health, and it goes far beyond dentistry as well.
How do you think we could stop this abuse, what steps would be necessary or what path would you suggest?
Are there any legal defenses for patients?
My feeling is, unless doctors fear legal ramifications for excessive x-raying, nothing will happen….
Savas
I have been looking for this article for years!!! You’ve addressed all my thoughts and concerns. My husband and I have been fighting dentists for years regarding x rays and our 3 young children. They’ve only managed to get a few out of us, but I ALWAYS regretted it and it NEVER changed treatment or showed anything drastic….now I’m worn out trying to just get my kids a cleaning and they’re refusing that unless they get their x-rays. We want to support a no x-ray dentist and am working on my mass emailing, but, does anyone know of one in the Sacramento/Stockton/Bay Area?? Or, even one in California? We are willing to drive, pay cash, etc. Great article, thank you!!!
Me too Iam very carefull with xrays. Last week I made an apt with a dentist for Carivu screaning , a new type of non radiation dental instrument that can detect caries, But as I went in the office with my daughter, this dental hygienist insisted of having a xrays, so I walked out right away. another thing my daughter is going to need braces, and I shop orthodontiast and most of the requires 3 pano and 3 Cephalometric xrays. But thank God thru continuous shopping and researching I, I manage to find an orthodontist that will only total of 2 pano xrays instead o 6 for entire treatments. We really need to shop the least xrays dentist .
Awww yes just left a Gentle Dental here in the area know as Oregon
The dentist and hygienist looked perplexed as I protested X-Rays
I simply asked her to be the surety for any harm committed to my person for the requirement of said procedures .
She gasped and said I will not!
Then I must refuse X-Rays
The dentist said she refused to even examine me without X-Rays I told her she should be ashamed of yourself.
Found a new dentist that same day that agreeded on no X-Rays ?.
Researching the motion to bring a legal Claim against Gental Dental and attending dentist ?. Thanks for your post good day
Hi Michael sorry to hear about your experience, but unfortunately it’s typical. I already examined the legal route. Unfortunately due to the legal situation in America, a doctor can refuse to treat at free will, even if you have a life threatening condition and need help immediately. You could drop dead in front of them and they could refuse to help (in fact anyone can do this without legal repercussions), even refuse to call 911. There have been several cases in the news where people noticed a woman was being raped and didn’t call the police. I believe here the legal concept is called ‘duty of care’. In other countries people would be fined heavily for not taking action… But I always get in trouble comparing countries, so I stop here 😉
I’m happy to hear you found another dentist who is more reasonable and is willing to treat you without x-rays.
Savas
where is this no xray dentist in oregon?
No kidding. I just switched to another dentist because my previous wanted to do x-ray in order to take me in. I am very conscious about ionizing radiation. Sure the probability of developing cancer due to dental x-ray is low, but when you have it, it is 100%. So I would like to avoid it as long as possible. It is very hard to find a dentist in the US who does not do x-ray on routine visit. ADA needs to change the rules. Cavity does not kill you, cancer may! So let’s avoid ionizing radiation as much as possible.
Hi Derek
I’m glad you found a reasonable dentist after all. By the way, the ADA doesn’t have rules or any legal authority. It looks like they only exist to make ‘recommendations’ on the ‘standard of care’ that translates directly to dollars. I am not aware of any ADA policy that actually costs the dentists money. It’s all somehow offloaded to the patient.
Another note, I don’t like the term ‘patient’. I like the term customer. I don’t see myself being sick like ‘a patient’ when I request teeth cleaning…
And as customers we should have rights and ‘purchasing power’, shouldn’t we? Well at the very least we have the power to walk away and we should use this power more often I think
All the best and thank you for sharing your story!
Savas
Does anyone have a referral to a reasonable dentist in Sonoma County, California? All of this is insane and frustrating.
Went to a dentist with a Groupon (4.9 rating with Groupon and Google) knowing a had a bad cavity but which felt like a like a hole in one of my teeth. After the cleaning and x-ray, the dentist walked in and without even a hello (bad sign) began probing inside my. NEVER looked at my x-rays. Said I had a cavity in between my front two teeth. NOT the one in the back where I had the pain. I asked her to show (I meant on the x-rays) where it was and she held up a mirror lol. I made an appointment and never went back. Will be filing a complaint with the Board o Dentistry
Thank you for your help with trying to find a dentist who does not require x rays! In the past, I was able to sign a waiver for no x rays. The dentist no longer accepts this. I was told that I was to have 18 x rays during the one visit, because it had been at least five years since full mouth x rays. I refused. I had even asked if I could split 9 and 9 on another visit. She said no because the x rays need to have the same date. That seems ridiculous to me. I live in Rhode Island and am hoping to find an honest dentist that respects my wishes. Thanks again!
I hope you find one soon, good luck!
Most likely there won’t be any issues anyways
Savas
Thank you so much! I am American but I have been through the ringer with US dentists. Every time they do an X-Ray they find a cavity that doesn’t exist. The level of dishonesty is truly unbelievable. I have had 7 different occasions where an American dentist told me I had a cavity then drove to MX and they couldn’t find any cavities. It’s a huge scam and the ADA an embarrassment for this country.
I agree, it’s a complete disaster! We need to get up and leave more often and show them who’s the boss! 🙂
I wish I could drive to Mexico from here but it’s a little far, I’m stuck (^_^) but luckily I found a good holistic dentist after all. Let’s pray she doesn’t move away
Savas
Thank you for this. Here are two links with 100% scientific data about how dangerous x-rays truly are. I’m left without a dentist because I refuse x-rays,…
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6341170/
https://healthcare-in-europe.com/en/news/dental-x-rays-may-increase-ca
ncer-risk.html
We simply cannot see decay just apical to the contact point between teeth without an x-ray, where about half of all cavities occur. We also can’t see the root tip where infections are without an x-ray either. A single x-ray is taken after a crown to check for an open margin. The ADA recommends bitewing xrays every 1-3 years to look between the teeth. You can request to do a minimum of x-rays just about anywhere. It is bad dentistry to either under or over use x-rays. This article is not balanced!!
Hi Patricia
thank you for your perspective. The article I wrote is a response to the unbalanced standpoint of the ADA, which by the way is just a dentist “club” with no legal authority whatsoever.
The ADA, just like many other national organizations, is just a club where a profession makes up its own rules, it’s like kids at school grading each other’s homework. How clever is that? I leave that to the readers to decide.
Most readers who read this article agree with me that things have gotten out of control here with x-rays. We are all well aware of the sales pitch that you have been told in dentist school but in international comparison it becomes evident that x-rays are being abused in the U.S. and other countries as well. This is for profit and nothing but profit, “dressed up” as a phony medical justification.
The major point here is that x-rays are not like taking pictures. There is radiation involved, to the head and thyroid and potentially other parts of the body. Think of all these little kids who go twice a year to the dentist and get x-rayed unnecessarily.
Do you really believe x-rays have no long-term impact on health? I bet you do because you have been told “a dental x-ray is like a day at the beach”. It’s not quite the same thing and there are no studies that examine long-term health outcomes, so the idea that the radiation does is ‘minimal’ has not much of an actual meaning and nothing to back it up.
If someone develops thyroid cancer 20 years later, will he be able to sue your office and prove he got the cancer from your x-ray machine?
No, so that’s convenient for dentists. They can take all x-rays they want and there are no possible repercussions whatsoever.
Now imagine this made-up scenario: If someone invented a process one day that clearly identifies your x-ray machine as the cause of a patient’s cancer, how many x-rays would you keep taking then? I bet x-ray machines would disappear from dentist offices really quickly….
But for now the benefit of the doubt is in your favor…and patients are likely paying for it with their health.
I don’t think having good (looking) teeth in exchange for cancer is a great bargain.
If you want a balanced perspective of how dentistry could be done, you could visit a couple offices in Europe and you will be surprised how much can be done, and done properly, without the use of x-rays. Naturally, if patients with severe problems should take x-rays as needed, no one here said x-rays should be abolished. But refusing to clean teeth if a dozen x-rays aren’t agreed to, that’s not medicine, that’s organizational blackmail.
Savas
Those are all fine and dandy uses for xraying a persons teeth. How ever this discussion is not about using xrays for looking at cavities, root tips, and crowns to check for open margins. We are talking about a paying customer that wants to pay for what they want. And only what they want. And what they want is to be able to have their teeth giving a good cleaning. The dentist or Hygienist is welcome to look at all parts of the customers mouth and teeth during the cleaning. And that is all we customers want. If a cavity is discovered then clean it and move on the the next tooth. I we have a sore tooth or a bad crown or filling, we can talk about it, but move on with the cleaning and finish the cleaning. If, and only If, we like the dentist, then we might agree to pay for repairs at a later date. Doing an Xray before cleaning is presumptous that the dentist is going to be getting another job of repairing any bad teeth. If the xrays show there are no problems then does the xray become free? When a customer want a good dental cleaning, there is no fore knowledge of the customers past cleaning and repairs. That is none of their buisness at the time of getting a a cleaning. Trying to force a customer to get all those extra xrays done when they are just wanting a good cleaning, is like if I take my car to the car wash and I am forced to get the oil, coolant, trans fluids all checked, tires checked, complete computer diagnostic scan, all before a car wash is commenced, for just the purpose of the possibility of finding something wrong, in the hopes that I willl pay the carwash/mechanic to perform any repairs afterwords. I have to pay for all that just to get what I want which is a clean car? There is no promise on my part that after my car is clean, that im even gonna bring the car back to get any of the repairs done at the place. However this kind of scam is to help influence me to get the repairs done at the same place, because all the carwash/mechanics are in cahoots with all the others, and if I have the repairs done at same place, Ive already paid for the exams; where if i take it elsewhere then a complete exam will have to be done and paid for again. The is a huge scam and I bet the ADA is behind it all.
Well said Patricia! I think the biggest scams are usually pulled off by the largest organizations, such as corporations, governments, and ‘professional associations’ such as the ADA, AHA, etc
Any recommendations for dentists in Scottsdale, Phoenix area that will clean with out X-raying?
Did you find A non xray dentist in Az?
What a great article! Thank you!
Awesome Article, I’m #1 who claims health should be treated 100% NATURALLY unless is a huge emergency avoiding death other than that NATURAL WAY TO DEAL WITH EVERYTHING!
The United States has been corrupted in The Health Field, forcing us on how to proceed with our health as they know more than actually us with our own body on what to choose. That is completed wrong!
That is one of the reasons I don’t visit the Doctor either take my son. I don’t trust them! Either way, we all are capable to figure out what is best for our body with calm time, not the way they make you feel fear or they won’t treat you, that is WRONG! Is a Dictatorship Capitalism System!
Anyone know of a reasonable and good and honest dentist that I can get a teeth cleaning for in Orange County CA??? Please ?
I was just sent away from my dentist for refusing X-rays in order to get a tooth cleaning! I was dumbfounded, it felt like I was in an alternate universe! What should I choose: cancer or clean teeth? I didn’t know that was a choice to be made, but alas it seems to be the case. I did a quick internet search to find out more about the issue and found your blog. Thank you so much for writing it! Very, very helpful. I will follow your advice.
I am also in Indiana. I am also trying to find a place to get a good dental cleaning, and all the ones in Bedford and Bloomington I called, they required an xray before they even have me open my mouth for examination. This is the stupidest thing ive ever heard of. Another thing I have is Cash. Yes cash. Apparently dentists do no like cash money. The give me the brush off at the receptionist when they learn i have cash in my pocket instead of an insurance card. They are a crazy bunch of people the dental people are so rude.
Do you know any dentists like this in the South Bend INdiana area. I was just kicked out of an office here today.
Hi, I too am close to the South Bend- Mishawaka area. Did you ever find a dentist? We are leaving the one we go to now (Chikaming dental in Sawyer, MI). We are in search of one that won’t make us do X-rays. If you found one, could you please share? Thank you!!
Dear Dr Papa,
I have just been kicked out of pediatric dental office where my children aged 5 and 3 would have their checks and cleaning because I was refusing x-rays. They wanted x-rays because they could not do an exam without them and it would be unethical for them. I explained that as a physician myself I needed and indication to consent to x-rays I was told it was part of the exam. I then pushed the issue and stated that she had not even examined my children yet and she again stated that without x-rays she would not be able to see problems.
I left the office and she emailed me and then had the owner of the practice email me. All I wanted was for a cleaning without x-rays unless they are indicated but was bombarded with reasons why dental x-rays are safe on children. Also my children are very cooperative and have no complaints of dental pain.
All of the pediatric dentists in the area refuse to see them if I will not do routine x-rays.
I come from Brazil where x-rays are never done on children on a routine basis to “check for problems” and coming from a family of dentists who used to do old fashioned exams (technology in Brasil was not readily available and my grandfather didn’t have x-rays in his office) I am flabbergasted at this new development. Hopefully I can find someone in my area who is willing to see them. I am taking your advice and emailing local dental practices.
Thank you Luiza for sharing your story!
The medical establishment in the U.S. has become a mafia indeed. The money is in the game, the more brainwash and coercion. What you describe is literally blackmail, especially if you need treatment and they refuse.
I think the only solution is to find those few reasonable dentists who are left, and perhaps leave the country for treatment if you can and/or must.
I get the impression the medical dogmas have brainwashed the dentists’ and physicians’ brains, leaving them unable to think on their own, or think critically. They also seem to select specifically only those candidates in U.S. medical/dentist schools who completely lack empathy.
In Nazi Germany’s they would have been the ideal candidates for the SS and Wehrmacht 😉
I mean seriously, of 10 doctors or dentists I meet, 9 tend to be antisocial. Maybe I live in the wrong place, meeting the wrong people 🙁
Savas
PS: I bet soon they’ll probably require you to have a Covid vaccine in order to let you in their office. Are we drifting into a medical / corporate dictatorship?
Can you please provide a list of dentists who will be agreeable to these requests? Surely enough have had success with the emails to create a list now to post on this website?
The names of those dentists are not publicized for a good reason, which is to protect the dentist. If you were a dentist accepting patients who refuse x-rays, would you “broadcast” it to the public?
Remember what happens in the media when qualified physicians appear in public with concerns about the safety of mRNA vaccines?
We live in an age where if you question or criticize the so-called ‘authorities’, it will result in a rather harsh response. Let’s call it “New Age Corporate Dictatorship” 🙂
Therefore, if I were such a great dentist who works without x-rays, I would also keep my mouth shut and do what I do ‘underground’, and only with people I trust personally (^_^)
Savas
OK thank you, is there a copy/paste email letter template that has been reasonably consistently successful please?
Yes please see update above in the article, I just added a copy of the email I used back then.
Please read the comments!
https://healthydebate.ca/2015/05/topic/dental-x-rays/
Thank you so much for this website! I felt so alone and isolated before I found it. My dentist for the last 15 years sold her practice, and her successor expelled me for refusing X-rays. I’ve made several inquiries at other practices, but without success. I’m not yet ready to send out 100 emails in hopes of a 2% success rate; it sounds exhausting, but also encouraging, because I feared a 0% success rate.
Hi Jed
sending out 100 emails (or at least a few dozen) is not as much work as it sounds.
You simply copy and paste the same text over and over. What takes some time is to put together the list of email addresses.
But once you find one or two new dentists, the few reasonable ones that still exist somewhere hidden (^_^), the effort will pay off many times over
Good luck!
Savas
Luv this website. U have hit the nail on the head. I grew up n the 50’s-70’s & don’t remember xrays as part of my treatment. It seems dentists back then did an physical exam of your teeth by just looking. I’m am now 70 & have thyroid tumors & a tumor growing on my vertebrae in my neck. I told my drs so long ago I am a customer not a patient! They need to start thinking of us as paying customers because as u know Medicare is not for those of us who pay taxes twice but for illegals. I still have a mouth full of 50’s fillings. I need a tooth pulled & knowing my dentist he will pull it w/out X-rays. Ppl move onto a different dr/dentist. I have refused CT scans as I know they cause cancer. I refused to let the hospital take a CT scan of my toddler grandson also. They treated him w/out the scan. Like ppl r saying it’s a scam. I’ve had my teeth done n Mexico, my husband & brother also had their teeth done w/out X-rays. So it can b done. What has r world come to? Fight for yurself & family & put yur foot down. Thank u for posting this site.
Well said.
Now the Dentists are terrified of being sued for malpractice. Their malpractice insurance dictates rules they must follow to prevent being sued. It amounts to more X-rays. Before and after X-rays. The last 8 dental practices I visited, would not even look inside and diagnose by physical inspection of the mouth. Did not have to open my mouth for any of them. Digital scans and CT scans or individual area X-Rays. If Mexico is to be travelled to, that’s where I’ll be. A statistic is showing that on average daily 7,000 Americans are crossing to MX for dental care: a lot of dissatisfied patients, but not enough: if dentists were losing business, they’d start listening to their patients concerns.
The best way is getting dentists who have lost their license, pay cash. The problem is not the skills, but ALL have been indoctrinated to take a proliferation of X-rays to avoid any lawsuits. Buenos Aires has the best dental school in the world…A local dentist in Woodland Hills lost his license, due to photos found on his laptop by another coworker …I don’t care what photos, to me he is still skilled and would totally work with a unlicensed practitioner, to pay cash and avoid radiation could not care less about ADA rules
7,000 on average each day
cross to MX (average daily) for dental work – the message is clear: many dislike working with our local dentists
Wow, I had no idea that X-rays were not used in Europe. Just went through this, when I told the hygienist I did not want the x-ray. She said it was “the law”. I have never had a tooth issue in my entire adult life, After researching there is no law that requires it, nor any code from the texas board of dentists. I filed a board complaint and off to look for non-xray greedy dentist or off to Cancun for a dental vacation..
I only have 19 teeth. My dentist wanted 19 x-rays! I offered to have 4 done. They said we could do less than 19,. When I told them for 19 teeth!?! They needed more than 4. I never asked how many more than 4. I set a limit and stuck to. He said we need more than 4 to properly treat you. I left. Dentists are a dime a dozen. Finding a good on is so hard, but when I do I stay with them until they retire, which mine recently did in the same office that wanted 19 x-rays. My old doctor was happy to work with me and he would do the lease invasive treatment necessary. Back to the drawing board.
Hi Linda
I agree, when you lose your dentist it can be troubling and stressful to find a new one
I hope you find a better dentist soon!
Please try the holistic dentist association. I would try emailing first to save time as you might need to contact a dozen or more before find ‘the right one’ 🙂
Savas
The Holistic Dentist association phone number and email no longer work.
Hi Cynthia
the contact details I just tried were listed on https://holisticdental.org/contact/
“To contact the Executive Director of the Holistic Dental Association, call (305) 356-7338 and leave a message, or email director@holisticdental.org”
I called the number and it appears to work.
Hope this helps!
Savas
Thank you, Savas, for your timely advice. Out of the blue my dentist, who used to not insist on the X-rays, just announced that I won’t be able to get cleanings from his office anymore without first taking 18 X-rays as a part of his “thorough examination”. So I’ll be looking for another dentist based on your recommendations.
SO if dental xrays are so critically important as U.S. dentists say then perhaps my family doctor should xrays all my bones each visit. Just to make sure there is no hidden issues…
I am sick of dentists telling me that xrays are mandatory, why does the insurance industry continue to support this practice?
Is there not a lobby group that we can all voice our concerns to?
Thanks.
Hi Dave
I understand your perspective.
In my opinion, the insurance companies are part of the scheme. Because they are legally required to pay out 80% of the premiums, i.e. the can only keep 20% for themselves, the more money is spent, the higher the premiums have to be, and hence the higher the 20% will be in dollars. Ergo, the insurance companies push for higher expenses so that they, in turn, make higher profits.
If they weren’t obligated to ‘spend’ the 80%, they would penny-pinch and micromanage all doctors and dentists to ensure only minimal procedures are performed.
And, in my opinion, it’s not just x-rays, it’s also unnecessary blood tests, vaccines, pills, etc. Anything that can be ‘sold’ to you, will be.

It was so refreshing to read this. I had pretty much given up on finding a dentist who wouldn’t force me into x-rays. I hadn’t gone to a dentist for years until I cracked a tooth and had to have a root canal. Yes, they did x-rays. I didn’t want them, but they gave me the usual, “It’s no more harmful than being out in the sun,” as they plopped the lead apron on top of me. I said, “Well, I don’t wear a lead apron when I’m out in the sun.” They ignored me. I had to have the tooth fixed, so I let them poison me, but I don’t want to go through that when I’m going for a check-up. Thank you for writing this article.
Thank you Chris! Good point about the lead apron 🙂
Hi, I just got home after trying to get my teeth cleaned and telling them I did not want X-rays and wanted no fluoride in the polishing process. I was told they wont see me and require X-rays every 6 months. They had a previous panoramic X-ray which I allowed because I had decay in two root canal rd teeth and was having them pulled. I now would not have a root canal because they are basically a dead tooth in the mouth and when mine were pulled they were decayed and this horrible brown color. They were very rude when I said no X-rays and said he needed them to tell whether or not I had cavities. I am having much difficulty finding a dentist that won’t force me to do X-rays that I don’t need and know are harmful. It is sad that we have no right to refuse something they want to do to our bodies. Amalgam fillings are toxic and should be outlawed. It’s all about money, not about our best interests. Thank you for creating this site.
Has anyone found a dentist in WA state? I haven’t been able to find one yet willing to not do annual routine xrays.
Thank you, thank you, for this article. I’m facing the same situation as you, I am also European, and was also refused service today for my dentist. Thank you for providing an alternative perspective. I found a couple local dentists that provide Carivu and I will contact them tomorrow to see if they will accept me without x-rays. Here’s an interesting article from the New York Times if needed by anybody: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/26/upshot/you-probably-dont-need-dental-x-rays-every-year.html
Following a Google search I found several dentists in my area who have the Carivu system in their practice. Many of the tout the Carivu system as an option for people who don’t want X rays. And yet, every single time I tried to book a appointment, they refused to treat me without X rays, and said they will only use the Carivu system as a complement. If anyone knows of a dentist in New England that’s willing to do a cleaning without X rays I would appreciate getting the name.
Thank you Rosemary for the feedback. I see, so we need to proceed with caution when using the Carivu technique.
But even so, these phone calls aren’t a waste of time; at least, collectively, we send a clear message to these dentists that we take our business elsewhere, and that’s something.
If we keep quiet, they think they won and can do with us whatever they want because after all, you’ve got to go to a dentist at some point, right? They have more ‘bargaining’ power ultimately…until you find the right dentist who will do it without x-rays.
However, if the phone rings many times a day and people aren’t coming, they will start to realize how much their stubbornness actually costs them…
The same thing happened to me today. I contacted a dentist advertising CariVu and was told they require full-mouth X-rays. Back to looking ….
I had the same experience with the Carivu system – I was told that it does not replace X-rays. So what’s the point? After many unsuccessful attempts, I recently found a dentist in Houston who did not insist on X-raying me for my cleaning. The other ones not only wanted to take regular X-rays, but also panoramic. Your best bet is to look for dentists with their own practice, which is how I found this one. They follow their own protocol and can see a bigger picture, such as missing out on big profit over earning a small one that they get from X-rays. This is where their greed can work to our advantage. .
Hi Alina, I like the idea of using their greed to our advantage!
So basically Carivu tends to be more of a money maker rather than a way to reduce x-ray exposure, which would be sad if that’s the case.
I agree that contacting smaller practices or solo dentists is probably better. The larger practices feel like corporate hospitals….

The other day, I finally had an appointment with a new dentist who will allow me to skip x-rays!! First the office accepted x-rays taken from the previous year. When I asked the dentist if I could opt out of future x-rays, he said “Of course :)”
What a concept! I have lived in four states, but he was the only one who’d let me opt-out without giving me a lecture first! I will have to sign a waiver, but that’s to be expected.
I found his office by typing in “holistic dentist, carivu, Dallas.” He told me that CariVu imaging isn’t really used by his office anymore. There are problems he can actually see with his naked eye that wouldn’t even show up on the CariVu.
The appointment itself was really good too. Firstly, the hygienist had me rinse my mouth out with ozone water. Then he took pictures of my teeth (with a little flash camera). Then he measured my gum line and cleaned my teeth with high-pressure water.
And with the digital photos (visible light, not x-rays), this dentist detected a cavity my other dentist didn’t even notice. Imagine!
I encourage you all to keep looking. There are diamonds in the rough out there.
Thank you Naomi for sharing your experience! This is great news indeed!

Soooo helpful! Thank you – unfortunately, I saw this after I was at the dentist today in a newer area for us who would not work with me on the “no x-ray request”. I have very few feelings in my mouth now I have not had any cavities for 15+ years almost 20 and have generally good dental health. I’ve had no recent facial trauma or head trauma so there’s definitely no reason for a panoramic x-rays -but this Dentist said it’s a malpractice issue and she had to do the x-rays. Nope. It’s not…. That has you’ve mentioned before it may be related to the insurance game. Great idea on paying cash if you find the right dentist, that’s willing to listen and let you have a say in your overall dental health. I’m checking Carivu dentist search results now- TY!!!!
or LŪM Transillumination 😉
So glad I found your page. I was fired by my dentist last week for refusing X-rays. Been going there for 15 years and have always signed a waiver stating I was told the risks of not getting them and decided to not get them anyway.
Made an appointment with a new dentist with the hope I would just show up, get my teeth cleaned, and then be told never to come back if I won’t do x-rays. They just called to prepare me for my visit in two days—said they do not clean teeth on first visit—they just do x-rays and exam and then discuss treatment plan and do cleaning on next visit. I said no x-rays, they said no appointment then—they will not see me without x-rays….claim they can’t clean my teeth without x-rays.
So….will try the holistic directly route….wish me luck.
thank you for sharing your story!
I took your advice and emailed holistic dentists and found one who will see me. Said they can only do a limited cleaning and limited exam without x-rays, but they are willing to do that much.
They said they can only clean the above gum area of the teeth without x-rays so I am hoping that is good enough. For all I know, that’s all that got cleaned anyway over the years. I’ve never had a deep root cleaning so could understand why they don’t want to dig around in the roots without x-rays–and not so sure I would want roots dug around in anyway.
They are “out of network” insurance wise so I will have to pay whatever my insurance does not and will not enjoy the deep discount one gets through in-network dentists. But that is OK…at least I get them cleaned.
Is it possible to post the name and address of your dentist?
Hi Courtney
I wouldn’t because that may cause them some trouble.
There are lots of x-ray and “standard of care” “nazis” out there who will probably try to do bad things with that information.
I have emailed you the name of my dentist.
Good luck!

Anyone given up and bought a copy of “When There Are No Dentists” with an eye to taking care of all their own dental care needs—-because we are not going to find a dentist who will see us?
Don’t know how to clean the tartar off my teeth….but guess I may have to learn. And hope I never need any serious dental work—-something I am a little worried about because I have a front tooth that has a bit of a crack in it—hopefully just a surface crack.
If tooth cracks, will I be able to find a dentist who will maybe let me get buy with one x-ray of the cracked tooth itself—or will he/she insist on full panoramic x-ray because I’m a new patient.
Hello, I also am against the use of x-rays for health reasons. One question for savas papadopoulos, does the recommended dentist from the post date November 2021 require the use of x-rays? I live within area and I can’t find a dentist that doesn’t force you to take x-rays. Any help would be great thanks.
No she doesn’t, I would simply give them a ring and explain your situation.

So….found a dentist that does not require x-rays for cleaning teeth….but when I got there, they would only polish my teeth–not clean them.
I was told thygeniest could not use any of the hand tools they use to scrape tartar from teeth–because without x-rays, they would lose their license if they did. They said without an x-ray showing what is under my gum line, they can not safely scrape away the tartar on the exposed portion of my teeth.
When I’ve had teeth cleaned in the past, they barely scraped under the gum line. Now they are claiming something dark and dangerous might exist a smidgen under the gum line which makes it unsafe for them to clean my teeth with a scraper.
Based on this, it would appear they would require a full set of x-rays every 6 months to be able to see what is under the gum line. Several dentists I contacted gave me the same song and dance about needing x-rays to clean teeth–they all seem to have the same script.
I ended up getting my teeth polished as was better than nothing. Back to the hunt for someone who will do an actual full cleaning like they have for the previous 50 years of my life without x-rays. This never seemed to be a problem before dentists had x-rays in their office…..
Has anyone found a dentist in Washington state? All the dentists that advertise using the CariVu in place of xrays, say that x-rays must be used also when I contact them. It’s such false advertising. This is distressing as I cant find a dentist for my family.
Tina, I just had same experience. I was so happy that dentist that a friend recommended uses CariVu. But when I contacted them for new patient appointment that said that that x-rays are required for new patients. I don’t know what to do now. I am not sure if I should stick with my current dentist, who does not require me to do yearly x-rays. But he still insists on them once in a while.
I’m looking for one in washington too, did you ever find one?
No, I still haven’t been able to find one. Its very distressing. I even got yelled at by a dentist when I voiced my concerns. It’s truly disgusting!
Are you on the west or east side of the state? I’m on the west.
I have refused x-rays from two dentists after initially doing x-rays. Both dentist became very short with me when I expressed my concern about unnecessary ionizing radiation. They told me the usual “digital x-rays have a very low dose of radiation”. They were not able to tell me the mSv of their digital x-rays. Even if the radiation is 1-2 days of background radiation, you are receiving that dose in a millisecond instead of 1-2 days. If you took 1-2 days worth of Tylenol all at once it may be a problem, but for some reason nobody seems to view ionizing radiation that way. X-rays have become a tool for lawyers instead of patients. I wish more dentists would stand up and say that this may not be in my patient’s best interest. If there is a significant concern then X-rays are a useful tool, but they should not be required for routine dental care. If you are a dentist or hygienist reading this, please consider your impact on patients and allow them the freedom to choose to defer something that they don’t want without showing them the door. I’m sure they will appreciate you and be one of your best patients because they know you see them as a person and not a liability. As for now, I’m looking for one of those conscientious dentists but I don’t think there are any in my area. I really hope I don’t have to scrape my own plaque/tartar but that is what it looks like it will have to be.
What about starting some type of organized petition or something? So that people don’t have to go without yearly cleanings in order to avoid x-rays.
I will get an x-ray if I need to for the treatment of a dental problem.
But I don’t want 18 x-rays, plus a panoramic every year just so I can get a cleaning!
I have found that now, most of the “holistic ” dentist want a head/neck CT with their 3D Cone Beam CT. It’s insane! Even the dentists that advertise they don’t do “routine” xrays, actually do them, as told to me when I call or email. They must be aware that a lot of us no longer want this forced upon us. Such false advertising and a waste of my time contacting them.
I am 81 years old and have almost all my “adult” teeth.
4 wisdom teeth were removed, because that is what you were told to do in 1960’s (and later) as a preventive procedure to avoid future dental problems. 4 other teeth were removed for orthodontics. Two lower teeth were slightly out of line and I was, it turns out, foolishly looking for dental improvement. I have yet to locate a dentist who will provide care without x-rays. However, your 2023 post gives me hope. Patients under US and COLORADO law have the right to refuse medical treatment they do not want or need. Doctors are legally required provide medical treatment. There are exceptions in the statutes. Dentists may refuse treatment to patients (customers) who refuse x-rays. I look forward to finding a dentist, using your 2023 recommendation, who will help me maintain and improve the health of my teeth, so I may retain whatever teeth I possibly (reasonably) can for the remainder of my life. Thank you, so very much, for your tenacious pursuit of a reasonable solution to a growing, terrible, health / financial problem in this country. DO NO HARM is missing from American (USA) dental practice for the past 60 years.
Thank you Savas for expressing the concerns I have about forced X-rays and likening it to the Nazism. What happened to free choice? Abortion, here in OR, free choice. Annual mammogram, free choice. Bone density test, free choice. Teeth cleaning, NO free choice. Why? MONEY!! Dentists have to pay off all the education (which I don’t understand why with all that education, they can’t figure out if you have a cavity without taking an x-ray), the fancy equipment, including that expensive x-ray machine, their rent, and their expensive car. Dentistry is no longer about taking care of you. It’s about lining their pockets, just like the rest of the medical establishment.
Check out these sites to find a holistic dentist: https://iaomt.org/ and this one https://iabdm.org. Also, bio dentist recommended finding homeopathic treatment at health store called xray by Boiron. It helps rid your body of the radiation.
I’ve tried all the holistic and even biomimetic dentists to no avail.
In fact, many of them have the cone beam CT on top of xrays!
It’s all very distressing. One of them suggested a product called Green Tea ND prior to xrays to minimize the effects….however, he still requires yearly xrays without exception. Ugh
No luck yet finding a dentist who will clean my teeth without x-rays. It appears they have all formed a cartel to force them upon us.
I ordered a set of dental cleaning tools from Amazon, and now that I have them I am afraid to use them. Afraid of scraping all the enamel off of my teeth in an endeavor to scrape off the tartar. It is unclear to me how to know what is tartar, what is enamel.
Meanwhile….I am getting brown stains in various small crevices and exposed bones that used to get removed when I got cleanings. I don’t like where this is going–but have not yet caved into agreeing to x-rays.
Anyone have ideas for at home stain removal that can be done safely? I’m using baking soda a few times a week which helps some, but not enough. I am hesitant to use my scraping tools for fear of digging a cavity into my teeth….
Would you please remove my comment dated Dec 4 2024. It has my full name. Or, remove my name.
I did Mrs S and thank you again for sharing your story!

I had my teeth cleaned today and refused the X-rays, which they are beginning to push every six months. They actually said it was “the law.” The dentist lectured/scolded me for five minutes after which I said “I understand.” She got a smug smile and waited for me to cave. I didn’t. Now I’m looking hard for a holistic dentist who won’t scold me for not doing as she demands.
You’re wasting your time, no dentist will risk their license by not following the guidelines set by the ADA. And if they do it’s actually a big red flag. The only way to fix the current situation is to force ADA to update their guidelines to allow patients to consent refusing routine x-rays. It’s not the dentists we should put the pressure on but the ADA, FDA and patients rights organizations. I believe that patients shouldn’t be forced to undergo *routine* invasive procedure (yes, x-rays are considered an invesive procedure due to the ionizing radiation) or face dismissal from their doctor. And this is how it works in the rest of the healthcare – my primary care doctor woudn’t even think about dismissing me from their practice if I’d refust blood pressure measurement or routine blood work. And yes, they also don’t have x-ray vision like this comic thing thay dentists like to say but they completely understand that at the end it’s my decision as a patient if I want to do even non-invasive procedures. They might give you a little lecture why it’s important and that’ll be it, only in dentistry you get DISMISSAL which is a shame.
It’s a useless (although a very important) battle. You won’t find a dentist that won’t require you to do routine x-rays. You might find one that will trick you thinking they are ok with that, only for later start nagging about and eventually telling you they can’t keep seeing you without them. The main reason for routine x-rays is (as always) financial. The insurance companies, the ones who pay for most of the dental work done in the US, push the routine x-rays because fixing a small cavity is much cheaper for them than doing procedures like root canal, extraction, crown, etc. They don’t care whether the radiation from these x-rays is bad or whether the benefit justifies the increased risk, they’re pro-profit companies that care only for their bottom line and it’s very easy to manipulate and twist the science e.g. the studies. The dentists are brainwashed since the begining of their education on the “importance” of routine x-rays and later when they open their own practice they’re being scared that a patient can sue them for neglect if cavity wasn’t caught on-time and they didn’t perform routine x-rays when actually it’s completely the opposite – there is more risk in doing all those routine x-rays and actually missing a small cavity on them and later the patient can take this x-ray and sue the dentist successfully for missing it. When in reality the amount of patients suing dentists in any situation for something like missing a cavity and now they need a root canal is almost non-existent but it’s scary for dentists that own their practice and a cool story to justify why they can’t accept a waiver.
Thank you Mr D for sharing your perspective. Saving costs would make sense if the insurance scheme were a tax-payer funded system. However, in the US health insurance is a private sector organization. And companies what to increase their profits, not the service they provide to the public.
I believe that insurance companies are actively pushing for more x-rays, simply because it *increases* costs. Health insurance companies directly profit from increasing costs, not decreasing them.
The reason is simple. Due to the 80/20 rule (see https://www.healthcare.gov/health-care-law-protections/rate-review/), health insurance must pay out 80% of the premiums they collect.
This means they can keep 20% for themselves. Ergo, in order to make more profits year after year, they must push their doctors to spend MORE, not less. As the spending increases, their 20% of it also increases.
No wonder all doctors are becoming pill pushers and test pushers, that’s what they are being told to do (in school and in their profession) and they are also being *rewarded* by the insurance companies as well as the pharmaceutical companies.
Did you know, there is a government website where you can check what gifts your doctor receives every year, from whom, and how much? It’s: https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/
It’s indeed a conspiracy against us, the people who depend on this ‘health-care’ system, we are the ones getting screwed and the cherry on the cake is we pay for all of it whether we like it or not…..
Savas
Insurance companies, in a any field, not just dentistry – the thing that they care the most about is how to decrease the total value of claims. They don’t care if the premium you buy is cheap or expensive, the profit comes from how it’s related to claims amount and they prefer to sell a cheaper premium as it means more people can afford it (but also increases the risk of claims, so it’s always this game of balance). But once you paid a premium they want you to be as proactive as possible to reduce the risk you file an expensive claim – this is why yearly physical at your PCP is free, to catch things early and prevent more severe expensive treatments. Same goes in dentistry, they’d prefer that you’d do x-rays even every day if statistically it’d show that the cost of these x-rays is less than missing a cavity and doing a root-canal and crown (which they’ll end up paying for in a claim). This is the maiun reason for the frequent x-rays. The “liability” part and standard of care are all made up stuff, they are completely ridiculous to anyone who knows how the system works. By the way, don’t think that many dentists are not aware of that, they are very well and they don’t do routine x-rays for themselves or their families according to the recommendations – far less.
Came across your article today!! Excellent information. Thank you for publishing on this topic. The comments by readers were also informative.
About 2 months ago, I was refused service by my dental group for not wanting to have x-rays done for a routine cleaning. I had several x-rays taken by them over the past two years for procedures including an extraction, an implant, follow up visits and routine cleaning. They were unrelenting about the X-rays, which I did not think were necessary (considering that only 6 months had transpired since the last visit). Since I am located in the Chicago suburbs, I have been looking at DEXIS CariVu listings for Naperville and the surrounding areas.
I actually don’t have an issue with X-rays so much as I have an issue with paying for things that aren’t necessary, and of the limited time in my schedule.
I don’t want to pay for X-rays unless it’s an emergency, plain and simple. My insurance supposedly covers X-rays, but I get screwed by my health insurance providers every year on something. I haven’t been free of medical debt in the last 6 years, and it’s not worth the risk. This is America in 2024–I am not in pain, and I cannot afford whatever you diagnose, so skip the x-rays.
The second part is, I don’t have a lot of free time. I have been trying to establish care, but I cannot get anyone locally to take me in and do a cleaning on the same day. They want two days of my time. They can take me in for x-rays and intake in 30 days or less, but they’re booked for cleanings until July, September, through 2024, etc.
Recently made an appointment with Aspen, the McDonalds of dental care. I spoke with someone on the phone and very specifically asked if I could get a cleaning. They said yes. I showed up and it was the opposite: X-rays and intake, and schedule a cleaning for another time. I walked out.
Started calling around, and this is what I get:
“Can I schedule an intake appointment and a cleaning on the same day?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“It’s not what we do.”
“Can you make an accommodation? I work in three states and my time with my time is precarious and very limited.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s not what we do.”
“Right, thats why accommodations are called accommodations and not business as usual.”
“We are booked out four months for cleanings anyway.”
“So let’s set it all up for the same day in July then.”
“No, it’s not how we do it.”
“Is there any legitimate medical reason that could possibly prevent you from cleaning my teeth on the same day?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“So in other words I have to go and let you take x-rays of my face just so I can come back in 4 months to get a cleaning?”
“Correct.”
Medical office culture in this country is so toxic.
Thank you!! Your effort and sharing is so appreciated. This Country that I love is like the Twilight Zone these days. God help us.
I just had to leave my holistic dentist for the past five years because of the X ray and cost issue. I referred them to two people too. When I originally went to them for their new patient special, I did the full X-ray not wanting to, but I hardly get them, so I did. I actually liked them a lot. The doctor taught me some new brushing techniques, toothpastes to watch out for, and to brush and floss three times a day. I am very diligent and have been doing that since. They suggested I come every four months. The cost was under $200. Then they started making me sign a waiver to opt out of X-rays. I was fine with that, no problem. About a year later they raised their cleaning price to $210 and I had been paying that and signing the form, with of course some push back from the hygienist and doctor about the X-rays, which honestly really bothered me. Then finally I tried to set up another cleaning and they insisted that I have X-rays and the total cost was $380!! I couldn’t believe my ears. This is a holistic dentist? I was honestly shocked and angry. I told them I’ll find someone else. And I think I did. They don’t push X-rays. I can come in just for a cleaning and visual check, but I have to sign the form. It’s all so very strange. I remember as a kid, X-rays were so rare, nothing like today. I don’t understand what has happened to that profession in this country. It’s wrong. We can opt out of any procedure from any medical doctor if we like, but we can’t opt out of a dental X-ray?
Excellent information.
Most commenters here would, I believe, find the following very informative warning about X-rays to be more than interesting. An 11 minute talk by the late Dr John Gofman, who was a renowned scientist with an expertise in ionizing radiation.
