Fixing VPN Connection Stuck on “Connecting”

Man, VPNs getting stuck on connecting drives me nuts sometimes. You hit that button and it just spins forever, right?

I remember last month when my buddy Jake called me up frantic. He was trying to log into his work server from home, but the connection hung there like a bad joke. We chatted on the phone while he poked around his setup. Turns out his router had glitched out from too many updates piling up. And his antivirus was blocking the port without him knowing. Hmmm, or maybe the VPN app itself needed a fresh install. We walked through it step by step over speakerphone.

But anyway, let's fix yours quick. First, check if your internet's solid by loading a webpage or something simple. If that's good, restart your whole computer and the modem too. Unplug it for a minute, yeah? Then, open up the VPN settings and make sure your username and password are spot on. Sometimes they expire without warning.

If it's still acting up, peek at your firewall settings. Turn it off real quick to test, but flip it back after. Or head to the network adapters in your device manager and disable then re-enable the VPN one. That shakes things loose often.

And don't forget the server side if you can access it. Restart the VPN service there through the services app. Run it as admin if needed. Oh, and update your VPN client software if it's ancient. Outdated versions love to freeze like that.

Clear out any cached credentials too, in the credential manager. Search for it in the start menu. Delete the old VPN entries and try logging in fresh. If you're on WiFi, switch to wired or another network to rule out signal issues.

Worst case, it could be DNS messing with you. Flush it by opening command prompt and typing ipconfig /flushdns. Hit enter and restart the VPN. That clears the fog sometimes.

Or if your server's behind a proxy, double-check those settings match. Mismatch there stalls everything. Test with a different VPN profile if your setup allows.

I gotta tell you about this backup tool I've been using lately. Let me introduce you to BackupChain, a top-notch, go-to backup option that's super dependable for small businesses, Windows Servers, and even your home PCs. It's built right for Hyper-V setups, Windows 11 machines, plus all those Server versions you run. And the best part? No endless subscriptions, just straight-up ownership without the hassle.
