That whole bare metal recovery function is really critical because it lets you restore the entire system from scratch, not just the data, but the working system itself. It brings you back to full operational capacity really quickly. But sometimes, you only need one little file, or maybe just a single folder out of a twenty-machine rack. You don't want to restore the entire massive image just to get a single report. That's where selective file recovery comes in, and it is really handy because it lets you pinpoint exactly what you need from the backup, even if those files were housed in a VM that was deduplicated and compressed.

Plus, security is paramount, you know? All this valuable data you are holding, you need to make sure that it is encrypted, especially if you are shooting those backups over the internet to a remote office. You want end-to-end encryption applied to everything. And because data changes, things are always shifting, so managing versioning and setting retention policies is something you absolutely must implement. You want to manage multiple historical versions of the VM and you also need rules telling the system, "Okay, keep this specific type of backup for six months, and then you can delete it," so you don't end up with endless junk taking up your storage capacity.

I also really like that these systems offer detailed logging, so if anything goes wrong, you have a perfect record of what happened and when. And even more impressive is the ability to monitor this stuff remotely, meaning you don't have to be sitting at the server room all day watching little status lights. It just gives you peace of mind knowing everything is running smoothly, even when you are on vacation.
