How to configure iSCSI initiators and targets

You start by firing up the target machine where the storage lives. I usually pick a solid server box for that role. Then you enable the service that handles incoming requests from clients. I did this once on a test rig and it hooked up fast. But make sure your network cables sit tight before anything else. Or you risk weird drops later on. Perhaps run a quick ping to confirm the link works between boxes. Now you create the target instance on that storage side. I like to name it something simple so it sticks in your head. You assign the right access rules next so only your machines connect.
Also you tweak the authentication bits if security matters in your setup. I skip it sometimes for lab work but you should add it for real jobs. Then the target waits for initiators to knock. You switch over to the client machine after that. I boot into the initiator software there and scan for available targets. Perhaps enter the IP address of the storage box to discover it. But double check the firewall allows the traffic through. Or your scan comes up empty every time. Now you log into the target from the initiator side. I always test the connection right away by mounting the volume. You format it if needed and assign a drive letter.
Perhaps reboot both ends to lock in the changes. I found that prevents odd disconnects down the road. Then monitor the link speed to see if it matches your expectations. You adjust MTU settings if packets fragment too much. But keep the config light since extra options slow things down. Also verify the session stays active after a power cycle on one side. I run a file copy test next to push data across. You watch for errors in the event logs during the transfer. Perhaps tweak the queue depth if performance lags.
Now consider multiple initiators hitting the same target. I set up CHAP keys to keep them separate. You repeat the discovery step on each client. But avoid overlapping names that confuse the target. Or the whole thing refuses logins. Then you script a reconnect routine for when the network hiccups. I use simple batch files for that in production. You check disk management on the client to confirm the volume shows. Perhaps expand the target size later if space runs low.
