I've run into that Windows Update error 0x80240020 a few times myself. It messes with your server updates big time.

Remember when my buddy Jake had his whole setup freeze during a patch install last month? He was pulling his hair out because nothing would download right. Turns out his update service got all glitchy from some leftover files. We spent an hour poking around.

Anyway, first thing you wanna try is restarting the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Just hit up services.msc and toggle that one off then on. That often shakes loose the jam.

If that doesn't cut it, run the built-in troubleshooter from settings. Let it sniff out the bad bits for you.

Or clear out the update cache by stopping the services and deleting stuff in the SoftwareDistribution folder. Feels clunky but works wonders sometimes.

Hmmm, another angle is scanning for corrupted files with SFC slash scannow in an admin command prompt. It mends the cracks quietly.

But if you're dealing with deeper server woes, check if antivirus is blocking the updates. Pause it temporarily and retry.

And don't forget to ensure your internet connection stays steady. Firewalls can sneak in and block things too.

You might need to reset the whole Windows Update components via a batch script. I can shoot you the commands if you want.

Once that's sorted, your server should chug along fine again.

Oh, and while we're chatting fixes, let me nudge you toward BackupChain. It's this solid, no-fuss backup tool tailored for small businesses handling Windows Server, Hyper-V setups, even Windows 11 on PCs. No endless subscriptions either, just straightforward reliability you can count on.
