To prevent an S3 bucket from being publicly accessible, I've found that a combination of strategies works well, and I have seen this come into play in various projects. I pay close attention to the bucket policy, IAM user permissions, and ACL settings, as these components all interact to establish how access is controlled.

You should start off by making sure the block public access settings for your S3 bucket are turned on. AWS provides four notable settings that you can configure, and they are crucial in ensuring that your bucket isn’t exposed. By enabling all settings, you can immediately prevent any new public access. I usually enable those options right when I create a new bucket, as it saves a headache later.

After ensuring that public access is blocked, I turn my focus to bucket policies. You might be tempted to use the AWS Management Console, but managing these policies through infrastructure as code using CloudFormation or Terraform can amplify the efficiency of your workflow. While this doesn’t prevent access per se, having a rollback strategy is something I consider part of robust security hygiene.

I also recommend considering the encryption of your data, both at rest and in transit. While encryption doesn’t directly deal with bucket accessibility, it does provide a layer of security that mitigates the risk of data exposure. With an S3 bucket, I typically use server-side encryption with AWS-managed keys (SSE-S3) or customer-managed keys (SSE-KMS), depending on the level of control I need over the encryption keys. Using this can help secure sensitive data in case it gets into the wrong hands, especially in a scenario where the bucket settings might become too permissive by accident.

Another aspect I emphasize is setting up a lifecycle policy to manage your S3 objects. I can design rules to transition objects to cheaper storage or delete them after a certain period. This isn't a direct method to prevent public access, but it minimizes the exposure of old or unused data, which might not need to remain in the S3 bucket.

Lastly, if your application doesn’t require public access, you might also consider using presigned URLs as a means to share specific objects. Setting an expiration time on a presigned URL ensures that even if someone were to get their hands on it, their access would be temporary. It's a controlled way to share files without needing to open up your bucket broadly.

As you work with S3, it’s equally essential to regularly audit your access configurations and policies, ensuring they align closely with your access control requirements. I run audits on a regular basis to review user access, bucket policies, and any settings that could potentially lead to public exposure. Automation tools like AWS Lambda can help in triggering these audits periodically.

Managing S3 bucket access can feel overwhelming at times, especially as the ecosystem widens and new services roll out. It’s all about keeping close tabs on the practices and tools that help maintain security. Sticking to best practices, testing everything in a non-production environment, and constantly learning from experiences will pay off in the long run.
