In a CPU, suppose we’re trying to access memory for executing instructions while at the same time needing it for reading data. If there’s only one bus for both, you’re going to hit a wall. Designers need to plan carefully to prevent or minimize these structural setbacks by providing enough pathways and resources. That’s one of the reasons why multi-core architectures work so well; they offer more resources to keep those pipelines busy.

Looking at practical examples, things get interesting with NVIDIA’s GPUs. Their architecture targets massive parallelism with hundreds, if not thousands, of threads working simultaneously. Yet, even in this world of parallel processing, pipeline hazards can interrupt the smooth execution of those threads. NVIDIA employs advanced splintering and threading techniques to ensure that when one thread stalls due to a data hazard while waiting for a memory access, other threads can carry on, keeping performance closer to optimal levels.

When you’re coding, especially in languages like C, C++, or even Rust, thinking about these hazards should factor into how you design your algorithms. Efficiently organizing your code can sometimes prevent pipeline hazards from occurring. For example, consider loop unrolling, where you spread out the execution of similar instructions. This might help the compiler better arrange instructions and avoid some data dependencies that would lead to hazards.

As with all technology, the stakes keep getting higher. When working on applications for cloud services or machine learning models, the data processing speeds are critical. Take Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) for example. These are specially designed for AI computations and can streamline data flows better by managing pipeline hazards dynamically based on loads.
